The UAE Wage Protection System (WPS), explained.

Mainland UAE employers (and most free zones) must pay wages through MOHRE-approved exchange houses or banks, so the Ministry can verify every employee is paid in full and on time. The requirement itself and its legal basis are confirmed by the UAE's own government portal; the exact penalty schedule for non-compliance is not yet officially confirmed and is flagged CA-TO-CONFIRM rather than guessed.

Worth knowing

  • The general principle that free-zone employees are "generally not governed by the UAE Labour Law", with each free zone setting its own employment law, is confirmed by u.ae — but which free zones separately opt into WPS is not.
