ECR: Electronic Challan cum Return, explained.
The ECR is the monthly file an employer submits to EPFO: one line per member, with UAN, wages, EPF/EPS/EDLI contributions and days worked — the return and the payment challan in one.
Last verified 23 October 2026. research/payroll-india-2026.md §2.5 (ECR file format).
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Format | Plain text, one line per member, no header row, fields separated by "#~#" |
| Frequency | Monthly |
| Key fields | UAN, member name, gross wages, EPF wages, EPS wages, EDLI wages, EE share remitted, EPS contribution, ER share, NCP (non-contributory period) days |
| Rounding | Whole rupees only, no decimals |
Worth knowing
- ECR amounts must always reconcile: the employee's 12% plus the employer's share (EPS + the balance to EPF A/c 1) should match what the Schedule rates produce for that wage — see the PF and EPS rates page for the actual percentages.
- A member on NCP (leave without pay, for example) has their EPF/EPS wages reduced for those days, not zeroed for the whole month unless no wage was earned at all.

Ask anything else; it answers from this site, or passes the question to the team.
Is the ECR the same as paying PF?
The ECR generates the challan that is then paid — filing the ECR and paying the resulting challan are two steps of the same monthly process.
